


Acceptable Forms Of Identification:

A California Driver’s License or Non-Driver’s ID

A U.S. Passport (or U.S. Passport Card)

An inmate identification card issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation

A driver’s License or Official Non-Driver’s ID Card issued by any U.S. State*

A Canadian or Mexican Driver’s License issued by the local government*

A U.S. Military ID*

A valid Foreign Passport from the Applicant’s Country of Citizenship*

An Employee ID issued by a Public or Local Government Agency/Office
​

An identification card issued by a federally recognized tribal government*
​

A valid consular identification document issued by a consulate from the applicant’s country of citizenship.*

The oath or affirmation of one or two credible witnesses

All of the identification documents listed above must be current or issued within the past 5 years in order to be accepted by California Notaries. IDs listed above marked with an asterisk (*) must also contain an identifying number and the photograph, signature and physical description of the bearer.

What if I do not have valid ID?

When the signer of a document is unable to present a valid identification document, there are two available alternative ID options called the use of: Credible Witness(es)

1) The first alternative is using one credible witness who must personally know both the notary and the signer to confirm the signer's identity.
​
​2) The second alternative is using two credible witnesses. When using two Credible Witnesses, both witnesses must personally know the signer to confirm the signer's identity. It is not necessary for the witnesses to know the notary.

The Credible Witness/Witnesses will go under oath and confirm: That person or people will personally knows the signer
​

The Credible Witness/Witnesses will confirm: The signer is the same as named in the document & The signer does not have or does not have access to a T1 or T2 ID.

The Credible Witness/Witnesses cannot be named in the document & cannot have any financial or beneficial interest in the document
​

The credible witness/witnesses is required to provide a T1 or T2 (PSPS) Identification.
​

The notary act will be entered into the journal with both the signer and the Credible Witness/Witnesses providing journal entry information including signature and thumbprint.
The signer(s) must be able to communicate directly with the notary. Translators are not allowed.
